L'Arche Avalon - Green Depot Account

Dear friends and members,

We would like to inform you that we have opened a charity account with Green Depot for L'Arche Avalon. We appreciate any donation of recyclable beverage containers to our account. For information on what is recyclable and where to drop it off, please visit the following link.

When you drop off your recyclables for donation, you have to go to the drop-off section at the Depot, then key-in our account # 3680624 and select the number of bags you have - the same number of labels will be printed for you to stick on each bag.

What a nice easy way to support our cause!

Thank you!

Outreach and Education Committee

We are very happy to share a photo of David and Petra, from the Education and Outreach Committee, who have given many presentations before about us and L'Arche over the last year, speaking here to Therapeutic Recreation students over at Academy Canada this month.

Please consider joining one of our committees, or simply joining one of our gatherings, to get a glimpse of what we're all about!

Warmest Wishes!

Dear Members and Friends of Cornerstone Housing Society and L'Arche,

What a wonderful time of year!  Christmas trees, Christmas lights and decorations are everywhere and there is a feeling of excitement in the air as we approach the holiday season.

We, at Cornerstone Housing Society, are still feeling the excitement of having recently received L'Arche Project Status!  We are full of anticipation as we move forward toward our goal of making a L'Arche Community in our area a reality - homes where our core members are part of a community of dedicated and caring people who see them and treat them as equals.

We expect that 2017 is going to be a very busy year for us. We invite you to join us in the spirit of community and friendship and to invest yourself and your resources - your time, your energy, your talents, your prayers and your money - in this work and in the L'Arche mission of working together to create a more humane society.  We are grateful for your friendship and support.

If you would like to consider Cornerstone Housing Society in your year end charitable donations, our Canada Revenue Agency Charitable Registration Number is 81025 5042 RR0001.  Online donations may also be made through CanadaHelps.org.  It's easily done on our website www.cornerstonehousingsociety.ca

I wish you all a very blessed and happy holiday season and all the best in 2017.

Warmest wishes,

Lewis Andrews

Launching the Boat & L'Arche Project Status!

Dear friends,

We held a very special event on October 21st and 22nd. We were given the opportunity to share, and introduce, L'Arche to Newfoundland & Labrador. First, we held an event at the Medical School on the campus of Memorial University, to anyone who wanted to learn about L'Arche and its benefits to a community and what it can bring to Newfoundland & Labrador. Second, and lastly, we held a "L'Arche Day" at the Rotary Sunshine Park on the 22nd of October. We came together as a community, with the help of some of our visitors, and demonstrated what a day at L'Arche will look like in our future community!

On Friday, October 21st, we were blessed with the visit of Raphael Amato (as our keynote speaker), followed by a panel, which included: Sarah Parasio, Krista Simmons, and Raphael Amato. The event was co-ordinated by Jenn Power (the leader of L'Arche Atlantic), the Board Members of Cornerstone Housing Society, our members, and the general public. It was an excellent evening! Click here to read the VOCM story.

On Saturday, October 22nd, we held an event at the Rotary Sunshine Park (just outside of St. John's) - where CHS regularly meets for gatherings and events - for a special "L'Arche Day" co-ordinated by Jenn Power and our visitors that came from a number of L'Arche homes. We came together, from morning to late afternoon, ate together, and participated in a number of community-building activities.

That particular weekend had one main goal: to share and introduce L'Arche to Newfoundland & Labrador. Several weeks before this particular weekend we had submitted our application for 'Project status' to L'Arche Canada. It is with great excitement that we can now share our wonderful news: Cornerstone Housing Society has received 'Project status'!

The following statement, regarding our L'Arche Project status, comes from our Chair, Lewis Andrews:

“We are very excited to announce that L’Arche Canada has granted Cornerstone Housing Society Project status. This is a significant step in our journey to obtain full L’Arche status and to ultimately create a L’Arche Community and open a home for intellectually disabled adults in this province.

Keep watching for more developments and exciting news as we discuss the possibility of a new name to reflect our new status and also consider when would be an appropriate time to start the process of hiring an executive director to assist in our work to bring a L’Arche Community to NL.”

We would like to thank everyone in the St. John's community for your continued support for our organization, and let's come together for another important stepping stone into the full development of a L'Arche community in Newfoundland & Labrador - a first for this province!

Walk at Kents Pond!

On a gorgeous late summer's day in August our Cornerstone group and friends made our way around Kents Pond (in the middle of St. John's near Confederation Building). We stopped for a little picnic mid-way and ended with a little impromptu sing-a-long. Everyone, including core members Anton, Mary-Beth and Paul, clearly enjoyed the outing!

Visit from members of L'Arche Homefires!

Dear friends,

We are starting a new blog, on our brand new website, with a post regarding a visit from L'Arche Homefires, which is located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia!

Three people from L'Arche Homefires recently had a 3-day vacation in St. John's: Maya Ranvig, Tom Smolarek, and Tony Hope. They were able to spend time with Anton, Alvan, Petra, David, and Lorraine with whom they visited Signal Hill, followed by having fish & chips in Portugal Cove-St. Philip's, where Lewis and Charlotte joined in as well. It was great to spend time with them and share stories.
